State violence, imprisonment, and subjectivation: discursive analysis of statements on prison walls

The present study analyzes statements written on the walls of the Ahú prison, which was located in Curitiba. The reflection is based on the Materialist Discourse Analysis, from which the concepts of discursive formation, interdiscourse, and contradiction become fundamental to understanding the process of meaning, based on forms of material existence inscribed on penitentiary walls. We reflect on the difference between pichação and graffiti, understanding these inscriptions as forms of self-writing. The analysis works on the excess of negations in the corpus statements and their discursive functioning. We conclude that the utterances are heterogeneous, both in relation to the discursive formation of identification of the subjects and in relation to antagonistic discursive positions. The walls become a possible place to speak out against the different relations of oppression to which the Brazilian prison system subjects inmates, guaranteeing them only the right to silence.
