Monitoring water quality in hospitals: a longitudinal comparative study on detection of critical points

Resumo: In the hospital environment, water is used for different purposes, such as: consumption, cleaning processes and hemodialysis. Regular supply and frequent monitoring of water quality are essential to guarantee the safety of the activities carried out. Consolidation Ordinance n° 5 of September 28th, 2017, of the Ministry of Health, regulates the sensory, chemical, and microbiological requirements for drinking water in Brazil. In the present work, a longitudinal study of the quality monitoring of the water used in two hospitals was carried out, identifying its main critical points. For this, 126 water samples collected from 2016 to 2019 were analyzed, of which 80 came from hospital A and 46 from hospital B. Over the four years of study, there was a variation in the number of samples in disagreement with current legislation. It was also verified that the samples showed nonconformities mainly in the analysis of free residual chlorine, 11.3% and 19.6%, and heterotrophic bacteria count, 5.0% and 2.2%, in hospitals A and B, respectively. With this, the importance of monitoring the quality of water in hospitals is verified, aiming the health care of employees and, in particular, of patients. Keywords: Residual Chlorine. El suministro regular y el seguimiento frecuente de la calidad del agua son fundamentales para garantizar la seguridad de las actividades realizadas. La Ordenanza de Consolidación No. 5 de 28 de septiembre de 2017, del Ministerio de Salud, regula los requisitos sensoriales, químicos y microbiológicos para el agua potable. En el presente trabajo se realizó un estudio longitudinal del seguimiento de la calidad del agua utilizada en dos hospitales, identificando sus principales puntos críticos. Para eso, se analizaron 126 muestras de agua recolectadas entre 2016 y 2019, de las cuales 80 provenían del hospital A y 46 del hospital B. Durante los cuatro años de estudio, hubo variación en el número de muestras en desacuerdo con la legislación vigente. También se verificó que las muestras presentaron no conformidades principalmente en el análisis de cloro residual libre, 11,3% y 19,6%, y recuento de bacterias heterotróficas, 5,0% y 2,2%, en los hospitales A y B, respectivamente. Con eso, se comprueba la importancia de la monitorización de la calidad del agua en los hospitales, apuntando a la atención sanitaria de los empleados y, en particular, de los pacientes. O abastecimento regular e o monitoramento frequente da qualidade da água são fundamentais para garantir a segurança das atividades desenvolvidas. A Portaria de Consolidação n° 5 de 28 de setembro de 2017, do Ministério da Saúde, regulamenta os requisitos sensoriais, químicos e microbiológicos de potabilidade da água. No presente trabalho foi realizado um estudo longitudinal do monitoramento da qualidade da água utilizada em dois hospitais, identificando os seus principais pontos críticos. Para isso, foram analisadas 126 amostras de água coletadas nos anos de 2016 a 2019, das quais 80 foram provenientes do hospital A e 46 do hospital B. Ao longo dos quatro anos de estudo, observou-se variação na quantidade de amostras em desacordo com a legislação vigente. Também foi verificado que as amostras apresentaram inconformidades principalmente nas análises de cloro residual livre, 11,3% e 19,6%, e contagem de bactérias heterotróficas, 5,0% e 2,2%, nos hospitais A e B, respectivamente. Com isso, verifica-se a importância no monitoramento da qualidade da água em ambientes hospitalares, visando o cuidado à saúde dos funcionários e, em especial, dos pacientes.
