Assessment of sand contamination on Cabedelo beaches, Paraíba, by parasites

Resumo: ABSTRACT Beaches are potential sources of intestinal parasite infection, due to contamination of water and soil with sewage and animal and human feces. Parasitic infections are very common in developing countries, due to the precarious socioeconomic conditions that are linked to the lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. This study aimed to determine the frequency of clinically important parasites in the sand of beaches in Cabedelo, PB. A field study was carried out to determine the collection points and 8 sites were selected on 6 beaches in the municipality. From each point, surface and 10cm depth samples were analyzed using the Hoffman, Pons e Janer and Rugai techniques. Parasites were detected in 11 samples (68.75%), being the larva of Strongyloides spp. the most frequently found parasite (56.25%). The other parasites observed were: hookworm larvae (6.25%), ascarid eggs (12.50%), Balantidium coli cyst (12.50%) and Entamoeba spp. (12.5%), Balantidium coli trophozoite (6.25%) and an adult nematode worm. The results show that the beaches of the municipality of Cabedelo are contaminated by parasites of clinical importance, which represents a risk of infection for visitors due to contact with the sand. It is therefore necessary to adopt monitoring and control measures by the population and government authorities, in order to improve the sanitary conditions of these beaches.   KEYWORDS Soil analysis. Public health.RESUMEN Las playas son fuentes potenciales de infección por parásitos intestinales, debido a la contaminación del agua y el suelo con aguas residuales y heces de animales y humanos. Las infecciones parasitarias son muy comunes en los países en desarrollo, debido a las precarias condiciones socioeconómicas que están vinculadas a la falta de acceso a agua potable y saneamiento adecuado. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la frecuencia de parásitos clínicamente importantes en la arena de las playas de Cabedelo, PB. Se realizó un estudio de campo para determinar los puntos de recolección y se seleccionaron 8 sitios en 6 playas del municipio. Desde cada punto, se analizaron muestras de superficie y de 10 cm de profundidad utilizando las técnicas Hoffman, Pons e Janer y Rugai. Se detectaron parásitos en 11 muestras (68,75%), siendo la larva de Strongyloides spp. el parásito más frecuentemente encontrado (56,25%). Los otros parásitos observados fueron: larvas de anquilostomas (6,25%), huevos de ascáridos (12,50%), quiste de Balantidium coli (12,50%) y Entamoeba spp. (12,5%), trofozoíto de Balantidium coli (6,25%) y un gusano nematodo adulto. Los resultados muestran que las playas del municipio de Cabedelo están contaminadas por parásitos de importancia clínica, lo que representa un riesgo de contagio para los visitantes por contacto con la arena. Por tanto, es necesario adoptar medidas de seguimiento y control por parte de la población y las autoridades gubernamentales para mejorar las condiciones sanitarias de estas playas.   PALABRAS CLAVE Análisis de suelos. Condiciones sanitarias. Parásitos Salud pública.  As praias são potenciais fontes de infecção de parasitos intestinais, devido a contaminação das águas e solo com esgoto e fezes de animais e humanos. As infecções parasitárias são muito comuns em países em desenvolvimento, devido às precárias condições socioeconômicas que estão vinculadas à falta de acesso à água potável e ao saneamento adequado. Este trabalho teve por objetivo, determinar a frequência de parasitos de importância clínica na areia de praias de Cabedelo, PB. Foi realizado um estudo de campo para determinação dos pontos de coleta e selecionados 8 locais em 6 praias do município. De cada ponto foram analisadas amostras da superfície e da profundidade de 10cm, utilizando as técnicas de Hoffman, Pons e Janer e Rugai. Foram detectados parasitos em 11 amostras (68,75%), sendo a larva de Strongyloides spp. o parasito mais frequentemente encontrado (56,25%). Os outros parasitos observados foram: larvas de ancilostomídeos (6,25%), ovos de ascarídeos (12,50%), cisto de Balantidium coli (12,50%) e de Entamoeba spp. (12,50%), trofozoíto de Balantidium coli (6,25%) e um verme adulto de nematódeo. Os resultados mostram que as praias do município de Cabedelo estão contaminadas por parasitos de importância clínica, o que representa um risco de infecção para os frequentadores devido ao contato com a areia. Se faz necessário portanto, a adoção de medidas de monitoramento e controle por parte da população e autoridades governamentais no sentido de melhorar as condições sanitárias dessas praias.   PALAVRAS-CHAVE Análise do solo.
