Resumo: | Self-care is the way that the act of taking care of oneself has the purpose of preserving life and personal well-being. To infer whether or not there is a deficit of self-care, the ability to perform it with therapeutic demands is being reduced. This study aimed to describe the self-care capacity of transsexual women. A qualitative study was conducted with 12 transsexual women at the Sexuality Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital of Maranhão, Brazil. The Appraisal of Self-care Agency Scale was used under the framework of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory. Study approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Age less than 30 years (75.0), brown (58.3%), medium to high schooling (66.7%), single (83.4%), income from 1 to 2 minimum wages and housing with parents (50.0%) and agnostic (33.3%) prevailed. Transgender women inspect their bodies (83.3%), are able to perform an assessment of what can be beneficial to their health (58.3%), ask for help from friends when they need them (41.7%), ask for information about their health (83.3%) and clarification when they need to take a new medication (58.3%). They have good self-care capacity (66.7%). Transgender women seek health services, especially in the process of body transformation with engagement, determination and need to adapt to adverse situations. |
