Resumo: Objective: investigate the prevalence of common mental disorders among farmers exposed to pesticides. Methods: farmers of the municipality of Lagarto-SE were interviewed and sociodemographic, health and occupational data were collected by a qustionnaire. Screening for common mental disorders was performed using the Self-Reported Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20). Results: 95 farmers were interviewed, 59% male, mean age 51.12 years and 56% with low education. Of the total sample, 76% had worked in agriculture for over 20 years. The results of the SQR-20 showed that 47% of the participants had mental distress. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between working time in agriculture and exposure to pesticides with common mental disorders. Conclusion: the indiscriminate use of pesticides may be associated with the occurrence of common mental disorders in farmers.

Métodos: agricultores del municipio de Lagarto-SE fueron evaluados, a través de un cuestionario que recopiló información sociodemográfica, de salud y laboral. También se utilizó el Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SQR-20) para la sospecha diagnóstica de transtornos mentales comunes. Resultados: Se entrevistó a 95 agricultores, 59% eran hombres, con una edad promedio de 51.12 años y 56% con bajo nivel educativo. De la muestra total, 76% había estado trabajando en agricultura durante más de 20 años. SQR-20 mostró que el 47% de los participantes presentaba sufrimiento mental, con una asociación significativa entre el tiempo de trabajo en agricultura y la exposición a pesticidas con trastornos mentales comunes. Conclusión: El uso indiscriminado de plaguicidas puede estar relacionado con la aparición de trastornos mentales comunes en los agricultores.Objetivo: investigar a prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns entre agricultores expostos a agrotóxicos. Métodos: agricultores do municipio de Lagarto-SE foram avaliados através de um questionário com dados sociodemográficos, de saúde e laborais. Além deste, o Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SQR-20),  foi usado para a suspeição diagnóstica de transtornos mentais comuns. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 95 agricultores, 59% do sexo masculino, idade média de 51,12 anos e 56% com baixa escolaridade. Do total da amostra, 76% trabalhavam na agricultura há mais de 20 anos. Os resultados do SQR-20 mostraram que 47% dos participantes apresentava sofrimento mental, com associação significativa entre tempo de trabalho na agricultura e de exposição a agrotóxicos com transtornos mentais comuns.
