REFLECTIONS UPON EDUCATION, FAMILY, MARRIAGE, AND WOMEN STATUS IN UM DIVÓRCIO, BY SARAH BEIRÃO

Resumo: | ABSTRACT: This study does an analytical reading about the novel Um Divórcio (1950), by Sarah Beirão aiming, mainly questions regarding the female condition under the educational issue. The focus consists in the impositions about the marriage into the model of the bourgeois traditional family in the 50’s of the last century, in which the choice of the husband was not still entirely a right of the woman. The position of the novelist about the rights of women, with active participation in portuguese associations, – for instance, the National Council of the Portuguese Women (NCPW) – became her outstanding in the defense of causes in favor of the minority class, more precisely of woman’s condition in the 20th century. Leader of magazines which aimed to consolidate the feminism in Portugal, her actions reflect in the elaboration of female representations which showed as the oppression much as the accession of the new values, such as the protagonist who insists in the divorce. Even though, it is a conservative and patriarchal society, it is necessary to emphasize the contributions of the female representations into this novel, rising up questioning of this ambit mainly taking into account that the most of female readers of the epoch still did readings of novels of the 19th century. This brief essay has resorted to the theoretical basis about the gender studies specifically the feminist criticism. In this context, there are, however, names such as: Anália Cardoso Torres (1996); Constância Lima Duarte (2003); Cecil Zinani e Salete Santos (2015); Fátima Pais (2012); Lúcia Osana Zolin (2009); Maria Elisa Cevasco (2009); Simone de Beauvoir (2016); amongst others. RESUMEN: Este estudio hace una lectura analítica sobre la novela Um Divórcio (1950), de Sarah Beirão con el objetivo, principalmente de las preguntas sobre la condición femenina bajo la cuestión educativa. El enfoque consiste en las posiciones sobre el matrimonio en el modelo de la familia tradicional burguesa en los años 50 del siglo pasado, en el que la elección del marido no era todavía enteramente un derecho de la mujer. La posición de la novelista sobre los derechos de la mujer, con participación activa en las asociaciones portuguesas – por ejemplo, el Consejo Nacional de las Mujeres Portuguesas (NCPW) – se convirtió en su destacada en la defensa de las causas a favor de la clase minoritaria, más precisamente de la condición de la mujer en el siglo 20. Líder de revistas que pretendían consolidar el feminismo en Portugal, sus acciones se reflejan en la elaboración de representaciones femeninas que mostraban tanto la opresión como la adhesión de los nuevos valores, como la protagonista que insiste en el divorcio.A pesar de que, es una sociedad conservadora y patriarcal, es necesario destacar las contribuciones de las representaciones femeninas en esta novela, levantando el cuestionamiento de este ámbito principalmente teniendo en cuenta que la mayoría de las lectoras de la época todavía hacían lecturas de novelas del siglo 19. Este breve ensayo ha recurrido a la base teórica sobre los estudios de género específicamente la crítica feminista. O estudo ora posto, traz uma leitura analítica do romance Um Divórcio (1950), de Sarah Beirão, apresentando como objetivo principal as questões relacionadas à condição feminina nomeadamente no que se prende com a educação. O enfoque se centra nas imposições sobre o casamento no modelo da família tradicional burguesa, na década de 50, do século passado, em que a escolha do marido ainda não era inteiramente um direito da mulher. O posicionamento da romancista pelos direitos femininos, com ativa participação em associações portuguesas, – a exemplo do Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas (CNMP) – fez dela destaque na defesa das causas em favor de uma classe minoritária, mais precisamente, da condição da mulher no século XX. Dirigente de revistas que buscavam consolidar o feminismo em Portugal, suas ações refletem na elaboração de representações femininas que mostravam tanto a opressão quanto a adesão aos novos valores, à semelhança da protagonista, que insiste no divórcio. Ainda que se trate de uma sociedade conservadora e patriarcal, é necessário destacar a contribuição de representações femininas neste romance, levantando questionamentos deste âmbito, principalmente, por se ter em conta que, grande parte das leitoras da época ainda realizavam leituras de romances do século XIX.
