MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS FOR WOMEN'S SOCIAL LIFE: MARRIAGE AS A HYGIENIC MEASURE (19TH CENTURY)

Resumo: This article addresses medical-hygienic prescriptions for the daily life of women, using as main sources medical theses defended at the Bahia's School of Medicine, in the 19th century, located in the Gonçalo Moniz Library, Bahia's School of Medicine (Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia), in Salvador/BA. It is recurrent in the issues addressed in the analyzed medical theses the discourse around women education, with several themes that focus on hygiene rules for the body and prescriptions regarding the behavior to be followed by women in the domestic and public spaces. Among these prescriptions, the doctors pointed to marriage as a prophylactic measure for the ills of women's health and indicated the ideal age for girls, young ladies, and women to get married. Medicine constructed a discourse on women education, considering marriage as a preventive/curative measure for women in order to avoid certain illnesses. The medical-hygienic discourses around hygienic prescriptions for women's marriage stemmed from the influence of Catholic morality and the dominance of patriarchy and resulted in violence and male domination, with negative repercussions that can be evidenced in the present time.

Es recurrente en los asuntos tratados en las tesis médicas analizadas el discurso acerca de la educación femenina, con varios temas que se centran en las normas de higiene del cuerpo y las prescripciones sobre el comportamiento que deben seguir las mujeres en el espacio doméstico y público. Entre estas prescripciones, los médicos señalaban el matrimonio como medida profiláctica para los males de la salud femenina e indicaban la edad ideal para que las niñas, jóvenes y mujeres se casen. La medicina construyó un discurso sobre la educación femenina, considerando el matrimonio como una medida preventiva/curativa para las mujeres con el fin de evitar ciertas enfermedades. Los discursos médico-higiénicos en torno de las prescripciones higiénicas para el matrimonio de las mujeres se derivan de la influencia de la moral católica y del dominio del patriarcado y dieron lugar a la violencia y a la dominación masculina, con repercusiones negativas que se pueden evidenciar en la actualidad.Este artigo discute prescrições médico-higiênicas para a vida diária de mulheres, tomando como fontes principais teses médicas defendidas na Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia, no século XIX, localizadas na Biblioteca Gonçalo Moniz, da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia, em Salvador/BA. É recorrente nos assuntos abordados nas teses médicas analisadas o discurso em torno da educação feminina, com diversas temáticas que enfocam regras de higiene para o corpo e prescrições a respeito do comportamento a ser seguido pelas mulheres nos espaços doméstico e público. Dentre essas prescrições, os médicos apontavam o casamento como medida profilática para os males da saúde da mulher e indicavam a idade ideal para as meninas, jovens e mulheres se casarem.
