Sua etiologia é multifatorial, sendo Candida albicans, o agente etiológico primário. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a utilização do vinagre como agente antimicrobiano, no controle de Candida spp.,em portadores de prótese total superior. Cinqüenta e cinco indivíduos foram submetidos à anamnese, exame clínico bucal e ao estudo da prótese. No tratamento instituído, os indivíduos foram instruídos a higienizar a prótese com escova apropriada e sabão neutro, retirá-la durante a noite, aproximadamente oito horas por dia, fazendo sua desinfecção em solução de água com 10% de vinagre, com pH = 2,89. Antes e após quarenta e cinco dias do tratamento instituído, foram coletadas amostras de saliva para contagem das UFC/mL e posterior isolamento e identificação das espécies do gênero Candida por meio de provas bioquímicas, de microcultivo e formação de tubo germinativo. Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de correlação de Spearman e ao teste t de Student para amostras pareadas, num nível de significância de 5%. As variáveis qualitativas foram tabuladas, sendo calculada a freqüência relativa. Concluiu-se que a solução de vinagre à 10% testada, controlou as espécies de C.guilliermondii, C.lusitaniae e C. parapsilosis, reduziu as espécies C. glabrata, C. tropicalis e C. krusei, no entanto não controlou efetivamente o principal agente etiológico da estomatite protética (C. albicans) em portadores de prótese total superior. Desta forma, sugere-se novas pesquisas que visem a utilização deste produto, em concentrações mais elevadas.Abstract: The prosthetic estomatite is the lesion most commonly found in the users of total prosthesis. Its ethiology is multifactorial, being Candida albicans the primary ethiologic agent. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the use of vinegar as antimicrobial agent, in the control of Candida spp. in carriers of superior total prosthesis. Fifty five individuals were submitted to the anamnese, buccal clinical exam, and to the prosthesis study. In the instituted treatment, the individuals were well informed about the procedure used to clean up the prosthesis with an appropriate brush and coconut soap, and to remove the prosthesis during night time, approximately eight hours a day, disinfecting it in a 10% of vinegar solution in water, with pH lower than 3. Before and after forty five days of the instituted treatment, saliva samples were collected for counting the UFC/mL and for further identification of the Candida gender species by biochemical tests like microculture and germ tube formation. The obtained results were submitted to the Spearman’s correlation analysis and to the t of Student test, for paired samples, within a significance level of 5%. The qualitative variables were tabulated, being calculated the relative frequency. The 10% vinegar solution controlled the C. guillermondii, C. lusitaniae and C. parapsilosis species, reduced the C. glabrata, C. tropicalis e C. krusei, yet it didn’t control, effectively, the main ethiologic agent of the proteic estomatite (C. albicans) within the people who carry superior total prosthesis.
