DEVELOPMENT OF AN APPLICATION TO ASSIST IN SMALL FARMERS DECISION MAKING: IRRIGATION

Resumo: In Brazil, small farmers are responsible for a significant amount of agricultural production. These farmers can benefit from deploying meteorological sensors and the analysis of these data to improve decisions regarding their crops. Soil moisture is a particularly important variable. Considering this, the present project developed and implemented an information system using low-cost sensors and free data repositories to generate and publicize information regarding meteorological data. The collected data are combined with public data on rainfall from a meteorological station in the region of the farms, generating soil water balance information which includes indicators of water surplus and deficit, that are shared through a website or an application for mobile devices. The results of the measured variables allow a deeper knowledge of the local microclimate. The farmer, once given the information, can use it as an element for decisions on crop irrigation. Therefore, the participation of farmers in the development of technological solutions is important. The relevance of an interdisciplinary team approach is evident in the creation of technological solutions that help sustainable environmental management

Esses produtores podem ser beneficiados pela implantação de sensores meteorológicos e pela análise desses dados para apoiar decisões sobre o tratamento de seus cultivos. Uma variável importante para a qualidade dos produtos agrícolas é a quantidade de água disponível no solo durante o desenvolvimento dos cultivos. O presente trabalho desenvolveu e implantou um sistema de informação que utiliza sensores de baixo custo e plataformas gratuitas para geração e divulgação de dados meteorológicos. Os dados coletados são combinados com dados públicos de pluviosidade de uma estação na região e aplicados em um modelo de balanço hídrico. Este modelo apresenta indicadores de excedente e déficit hídrico que podem ser apresentados através de site na Internet, ou, de aplicativo para dispositivos móveis. Os resultados das variáveis medidas permitem um conhecimento mais aprofundado do microclima local. O produtor, tendo recebido a informação, pode usá-la como elemento para decisões sobre irrigação dos cultivos.  Por isso, é importante a participação dos agricultores na produção da solução tecnológica.
