Resumo: Some studies report that the managers of small companies have difficulties to use management tools of the financial area, which can be influenced by the level of knowledge of the related concepts. In this sense, the objective of this study was to identify the level of knowledge about certain financial concepts by micro and small business managers of a micro-region in the South of Santa Catarina. The research is characterized as descriptive, with quantitative approach and use of the survey procedure to collect the data of 299 small firms. After a brief review of the literature and evidence from previous studies, data were collected about the level of knowledge about the concepts covered. The results show that at least 55% of managers have knowledge about the researched concepts, but this contingent did not exceed 75% in any of the investigated items. It was pointed out that the lower level of managerial knowledge refers to the concept of current liquidity. On the other hand, the concepts most known to managers are linked to financial accounting (Current Assets, Current Liabilities and Statement of Income). Another finding is that managers of industrial companies have a higher level of knowledge regarding the items surveyed when compared to the leaders of commercial and service firms.
