Resumo: The effect of B-adrenergic receptors antagonists has been correlated with bone remodeling. The aim of this study was analyze the effect of atenolol on the mineralized tissue, tibia, the offspring of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar rats. Atenolol (100mg/kg/day, po) was administered during the pregnancy and lactation periods. The X-ray densitometry (DR), length (C), width (L) and microhardness (MD) of the tibia of youngest rats treated or not treated with atenolol were analyzed and the results were compared between groups. The results showed that the tibia of SHR has reduced DR, C and L when compared with the tibia of Wistar rats, but no alteration was observed in MD. Treatment with atenolol reduced the DR, the C and L in Wistar rats and increased the MD when compared to untreated rats. In SHR, atenolol did not alter the C, L and MD, but reduced the DR compared to untreated SHR. The results demonstrated that SHR rats have some alterations in formation and/or development of the tibia once the parameters measured have been low when compared to the normotensive rats. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do atenolol sobre o tecido mineralizado, tíbia, de filhotes de ratas espontaneamente hipertensas (SHR) e normotensas Wistar. O atenolol (100mg/Kg/dia, v.o.) foi administrado durante os períodos de prenhez e lactação. A densitometria radiográfica (DR), o comprimento (C), a largura (L) e a microdureza (MD) de tíbias de filhotes de ratas SHR e Wistar tratadas ou não com atenolol, foram analisados e os resultados foram comparados entre os grupos. Os resultados demonstraram que as tíbias de filhotes de ratas SHR apresentam reduzida DR, C e L quando comparada com tíbia de filhotes Wistar, porém sem alteração na MD. O tratamento com atenolol reduziu a DR, o C e L em filhotes Wistar e aumentou a M em comparação aos filhotes Wistar sem tratamento. Já em filhotes SHR, o atenolol não alterou o C, L e M, mas reduziu a DR em relação aos filhotes SHR não tratados.
