Resumo: | Sand is an important mineral product for civil construction and industry, as aggregate and input for ceramic floors, glass and foundry. Large urban centers are the main consumers of sand, which has led to the exhaustion of several mines in its vicinity, mainly in the southeastern region of the country, which creates the need for research into new deposits in increasingly distant locations. This work presents the study developed on the Rio Claro Formation, which aimed to technologically characterize its lithology and soil. The research involved stages of preparing cartographic bases, delimiting the occurrence of the Rio Claro Formation in areas that could be explored, sample collection, analysis of the samples by sieving and sedimentation tests, physical indexes, magnifying glass analysis and comparison with the existing standards for use in industry and construction. 33 samples were collected at 15 different points between soil, friable sandstone of the whitish sandstone and sands benefited by the existing mining in the region that already exploits this formation. The analyzes of granulometry, physical indexes and impurities in the grains, showed a variation of attributes along the formation, more economically viable in the whitish sandstone located at depths of 4 to 10 m, with 10 to 15 m of thickness. In comparison to the other materials of the formation, this sequence presents about 10% less fine, grains of sand without iron crust and absence of magnetite, highlighting its greater thickness in the relief of tabliform hills. According to the norms, the sandy materials of the formation, after processing, can be used as fine aggregate, in the manufacture of flat glass and crystal vases. The results seek to expand the technological characterization of the formation and its uses, enabling a correlation with other units related to cenozoic deposits. |
