Resumo: Amino acids perform important functions as components of proteins and are essential for maintenance status that can be defined as the state of conservation of intact body status. Three nitrogen balance assays were performed to determine the requirement of valine, isoleucine and tryptophan maintenance for adult males of Japanese quails, totaling168 poultry. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with eight treatments and seven replicates of one bird for each amino acid, and the levels were obtained by the dilution technique. The experimental period was 96 hours, the first 24 hours of adaptation, and in the subsequent 72 hours, two meals were provided per day of 7.5g each, totaling 15 grams of feed/day. Feed intake (CR) was calculated by subtracting the leftovers from the feeder. Excretes were collected twice a day. Excretes and rations were analyzed for dry matter and total nitrogen. Based on the chemical analyses it was possible to calculate nitrogen intake (NI) and the nitrogen excretion (NEX) where difference between NI and NEX set the nitrogen balance values (BN), which were analyzed by linear regression, considering the requirement of maintaining interception in abscissa when BN=0. The requirement of vain, isoleucine and tryptophan for maintenance of Japanese quails was 87, 58 and 11 mg/kgPC0.67, respectively.
