Resumo: Background: The reduction in total muscle work and the consequent loss muscle power as a function of physical inactivity commonly impair autonomy and quality of life of individuals. The present study aimed to measure the values of work and power in practitioners and non-practitioners of Pilates. Methods: Isokinetic evaluations of the trunk were performed on 40 young women (pilates practitioners and control) in 60°/sec and 120°/sec. Results: The total work values were higher for pilates in flexion (P < 0.001) and trunk extension (P < 0.001) in 60°/sec and 120°/sec. The Student t test showed significant differences for muscle power, between the flexors muscles (P < 0.001), extensors muscles (P < 0.001) in 60°/sec and flexors muscles (P < 0.001) and extensors muscles (P < 0.001) in 120°/sec. Conclusion: Based on our results, Pilates might be effective in training the trunk core muscles. The women practitioners could yield significantly greater power and total work in comparison with the non-practitioners.
