The tanning of leather pieces using chromium salts brings the product mechanical and biological resistance, but residues are generate such as chips or leftovers of finished products that currently do not have an efficient disposal, being necessary the incineration of these products. The present work aims to remove the chromium present in the leather in order to make its disposal easier. The characterization and thermoanalytical study of the chromium tanned leather are discussed in the present work. The characterization of the sample was performed using the X-ray diffraction technique by the powder method and the thermal study was carried out through Temogravimetry (TG) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) at the same time. The thermoanalytical methods were used to verify the thermal decomposition, thermal stability and the removal of the chromium after the treatment with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) through the final residue formed. The leather samples were cut into squares of 0.5 cm2 for EDTA solution treatment, which was used with the aid of a conventional microwave oven to accelerate the formation of the Cr-EDTA complex being evidenced by the formation of a purple stained solution
