Resumo: What is the relation between consciousness and brain activity? Is it possible that the kind of brain activity that directly suppots consciousness is not a neuronal function? In this essay, I present a new perspective in brain sciences, the Astrocentric Hypothesis raised by James Robertson, considering astrocyte activity as the final step in the processing of information that reaches consciousness. The astrocytic network, formed by the connection of astrocytes from all brain sub-systems, would be responsible for the integration of affective, emotional, perceptual and cognitive aspects into coherent and unitary conscious episodes, corresponding to the "here and now" of our individual experience.
