Revisão taxonômica do gênero Fritziana Mello-Leitão, 1937 (Anura; Hemiphractidae)

The genus of marsupial tree frogs Fritziana (Family Hemiphractidae) is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and is composed by three species (Fritziana fissilis, F. goeldii, and F. ohausi), although it probably present a larger diversity and distribution, with the occurrence of cryptic species. The species are morphologically very similar and of difficult identification, mainly because of deficient descriptions and overlap of morphological characters. Herein, we propose a taxonomic review based in molecular biology and external morphology. First, we aimed to understand the relationships among the species as well as the relationships among populations of each species, using molecular markers. We used three mitochondrial loci from throughout the distribution of the genus and made parsimony, Bayesian, and likelihood analyses. These data show that the genus is monophyletic and separated in eight clades that do not present high support among them. One of these clades shows a gene order change and the clades with large geographical distribution present internal branches, limited geographically by Tietê River. For morphological analyses we divided the specimens from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states in five groups. Discriminant analyses made with morphometric data show a partial overlap among the species. We propose a neotype for F. ohausi, once its original holotype was destroyed, and a redescription for F. goeldii. Based in morphological data, we propose the Fritziana fissilis species group to allocate three species that were cryptically hidden among F. fissilis and that have closed dorsal pouch to carry eggs and bifid or divided subarticular tubercles. To compose this group, we redescribe the type series of F. fissilis, revalidate F. ulei, that was a synonym of F. fissilis, and describe a new species: Fritziana sp.
