Resumo: The story of A Torre da Barbela (1966), by Ruben A., brings a rich narrative about a tower that became a national monument while the narrative takes place. A caretaker lives in the tower, he is also its guide and receives tourists daily. However, what is unaware for the common people is the reality of the place at night: after dusk, eight centuries of generations of the Barbela family come out of their graves to inhabit the tower. A surrealist aesthetic comes from this narrative background, mainly, from the concepts of supra reality and authentic self, a narrator's analysis, thinking in its different instances, the relationship between reality and fiction and the face of the historical romance as well as its face as a Portugal's allegory. This paper proposes, in a first moment of its extent, to analyze the aspects of the surrealist aesthetic in the Portuguese novel A Torre da Barbela (1966), by Ruben A. Additionally, it proposes a brief analysis about the narrator of this novel, followed by a discussion of the relationship between reality and fiction that are present in its narrative fabric. For this analysis, it was essential to read Carlos Gomes (1995), especially André Breton (1924-19299) and Alejo Carpentier (1928). For the analysis of the narrator, it was mainly used authors like Maria Célia Leonel (2000), Wayne Booth (1980) and Oscar Tacca (1983). As for the relationship between reality and fiction, the concepts analyzed were proposed by Wolfgang Iser (1996) and Roland Barthes (1972). The final discussion on the historical face of the novel, proposed observations analyzed by Maria de Fatima Marinho (2012). Looking to achieve these goals, the surrealist aspects of Ruben A. novel were analyzed, reaching the conclusion that he was governed both by the surrealist revolt and the supra reality proposed by Breton. In addition, the Knight character was parsed from the authentic self... (Complete abstract eletronic access below)
