Whereas during the generation of wood chips for equipment such as chippers used to produce raw material for particle boards brings a natural wear of the cutting tools that can be aggravated by interference of foreign matter such as bark, that has high silica content providing greater wear to the material, presence of nails, staples and rocks which may even lead to breakage of the knife cutting edge, a study is needed on the lifetime of the chipper knives in order to evaluate the wear suffered by them in order to increase their work time. The useful lifetime is the time estimated that a device works efficiently and productively which can vary according to the maintenance processes, the present study carried out a control of wear of the chipper knives that consists of measuring the width of each of the ten knives of the seven sets that were in rotation and through this process it was possible to assess whether the knife taken for testing chosen at random for each set serves as disposal parameter of the sets which according to the manufacturer must reach a width of 76.2 mm. But in some cases only this knife reached the discard measure and the other still had enough working width, the opposite also occurs leading to implementation of a new disposal control through measuring five knives of each set to avoid unnecessary disposal. In addition, standardized up the grinding system because the number of times the grinding stone goes over the knife did not follow any rule and was conducted independently by each sharpener. With that held, a chipper chart control was made to improve productivity since it is directly linked to the hours worked of their tools.
