Resumo: | The severely ill patient presents several physiologic changes that lead to na inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues/organs, such as low cardiac output, hypotension, and microcirculatory changes. When tissue oxygen delivery cannot sustain aerobic metabolism, the cells will obtain energy (adenosine triphosphate) via lactic fermentation, which will result in an increase in plasma lactate levels. In human and veterinary medicine, plasma lactate allows to establish the severity and prognosis of severely ill patients, since it is expected that plasma lactate will show higher concentrations during advanced shock states, where there is a greater degree of organ dysfunction and greater probability of death. This literature review will approach the progression of this parameter in the severely ill patient, emphasizing its prognostic value and its usefulness in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment in animals |

This literature review will approach the progression of this parameter in the severely ill patient, emphasizing its prognostic value and its usefulness in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment in animalsOs pacientes em estado grave apresentam diversas alterações fisiológicas que resultam em oferta inadequada de oxigênio aos tecidos/órgãos, como redução do débito cardíaco, hipo-tensão e alterações na microcirculação.
