Resumo: The study for understanding the social and environmental vulnerability is characterized by the need to understand the factors that contribute to the individual's vulnerability, communities and systems, as well as their resilience. The objective of this study is the modeling of socioeconomic and environmental indicators in order to map Rio Claro's (SP) Urban Area vulnerability to flooding. Therefore, it is considered the exposure of people, defined as criticality of place, support capacity, in situations related to disaster risks. The Census selected variables of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, 2010) are related to socioeconomic characteristics and urban infrastructure through the adding of the city's neighborhoods. From this, a factorial analysis was performed by grouping the variables using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical method, through software SPSS / IBM. As a result, it shows the spatial distribution of data through the elaboration of thematic maps using Geographic Information System (GIS) integrating census data through socioeconomic variables, physical data through environmental variables, data raised from the flood occurrences on Civil Defence and from the city's newspapers. The results achieved in this work intend to contribute to the public management bodies in the managing and planning of the activities through methodological improvements aiming the optimization of mapping and characterization of the priority regions for Public Administration acting

O objetivo deste estudo foi a modelagem de indicadores socioeconômicos e ambientais visando o mapeamento da vulnerabilidade as inundações da Área Urbana de Rio Claro SP. Sendo assim, considera-se a exposição das pessoas, definido como Criticidade do lugar, a Capacidade Suporte, frente a situações relacionadas aos riscos de desastres. As variáveis do Censo do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE, 2010) selecionadas são relacionadas às características socioeconômicas e da infraestrutura urbana com agregação para os bairros do município. A partir disto, foi realizada a Análise Fatorial que permitiu agrupar as variáveis pelo método estatístico Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP), por meio do Software SPSS/IBM. Como resultados, apresenta-se a espacialização dos dados com a elaboração de mapas temáticos por meio de Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG), integrando-se dados censitários por meio das variáveis socioeconômicas, dados físicos por meio das variáveis ambientais e dados de ocorrências de inundações levantados na Defesa Civil e jornais da cidade.
