Surgical training involves complex theoretical and practical concepts, particularly related to operative technique and its basic concepts, among them the development of skills is considered essential. Experimental surgeries, performed once for this purpose, are currently conflicting with current concepts of animal welfare and has been gradually discouraged. The alternative to vivisection methods, as well as helping to develop skills, establish critical thinking and meet the required educational function without harming the animals. Grounded in the doctrine of the 3Rs that evoke the reduction and replacement of animals and refinement of techniques employed in the experiment, we seek to develop, evaluate and standardize alternative teaching resources that reduce or replace the use of animals in surgical teaching and to enable acquisition of skills and practical knowledge needed to conduct maneuvers accordingly to the principles of surgical asepsis and fundamental stages of surgical technique, giving Students the confidence and skills necessary to performing a surgical procedure with minimal operative risk, and finally, the primacy of ethics and animal welfare
