Resumo: This Project theme approaches several points that stand out in the context of the utilzation of ceramic tools in the turning process of hardened steels, which study is necessary to develop the knowledge of the machining by turning with the objective of replacing the grinding process. In the present study, we studied the turning of hardened AISI 4340 steel (56 HRC hardness), evaluating its machinability with recently developed aluminum oxide ceramic tools, analyzing the behavior of the power consumed, acoustic emission, vibration, final roughness, and tools wear in all different conditions adopted. And also the study of the types and shapes of the chips generated during the tests. The use of the dry machining of hardened AISI 4340 steel was introduced in order to achieve a more economical, cleaner and safer machining with less risk to the environment and to the worker when compared to conventional lubrication. In addition to the application of dry machining, the hard turning also offers several benefits such as: reduction of cost per product, good surface finish closer to grinding, high productivity and reduction of setup times. However, among the disadvantages is the increase of the wear of the tool, leading, therefore, to the decrease of its life. In this way, making the machining of hardened steels with simple ceramic tools possible, we can have a great economic impact on the machining processes when compared to more traditional tools. Currently the material considered as suitable for machining in these conditions is the PCBN (polycristalline cubic boron nitrite), however, it can cost around 15 to 20 times the price of the ceramics. From the studied factors, the advance and depth of cut have been shown to be more important, with the advance being the most critical factor in the evaluation of the final surface quality. Better surface ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
