Resumo: The pursuit for gender equality is an unfinished task, even in the university environment. This study aimed to investigate the differences between genders in terms of the performance and participation of students in the Mechanical Production Engineering course at a public college in the state of São Paulo. The methods used to achieve these objectives were: analysis of academic record data from male and female students, provided by the university; application of a questionnaire to institution students and graduates; interviews with female student group members. To treat the collected data, acknowledged statistical tools were used, among which: descriptive statistics, comparison of proportions, t test, independence test, median test. It was shown that the performance of female students is, in most aspects analyzed, higher than male students' performance. There was also a greater involvement of women in research, extension, representation and complementary activities. Despite this, it was found that women continue to suffer more discrimination and harassment than people of the male gender

Este trabalho teve por objetivo investigar as diferenças entre gêneros quanto ao desempenho e à participação de discentes do curso de Engenharia de Produção Mecânica de uma faculdade pública do interior do Estado de SP. Os métodos utilizados para se atingir esses objetivos foram: análise de dados cadastrais acadêmicos de alunos e alunas, fornecidos pela universidade; aplicação de questionário aos estudantes e egressos da instituição; entrevistas com componentes de agrupamentos de alunas. Para tratar os dados coletados, foram utilizadas ferramentas estatísticas consagradas, entre as quais: estatística descritiva, comparação de proporções, teste t, teste de independência, teste da mediana. Verificou-se que o desempenho das alunas é, na maioria dos aspectos analisados, superior ao dos alunos. Verificou-se, também, um maior envolvimento das pessoas femininas em atividades de pesquisa, de extensão, de representação e complementares.
