Resumo: One of the biggest challenges in the avian medicine is to diagnose some diseases, since these species hide their clinical signs, presenting them only in advanced stages of the disorder. Among the most common diseases in birds kept in captivity is the hepatic lipidosis, characterized by accumulation of lipids in the hepatocytes, altering its functioning. The etiology may vary, and may be due to inadequate feeding, toxins or secondary to other liver diseases. This literature review aims to compare the different diagnostic methods for hepatic lipidosis in birds. For this purpose seven articles were selected in English describing the steps to reach a definitive diagnosis of the disease. It was verified that liver biopsy is the most reliable method to arrive at the definitive diagnosis, being the other exams important to help lead the clinician to the suspicion of hepatic diseases, but without differentiating among them

Dentre as enfermidades mais comuns em aves mantidas em cativeiro, se encontra a lipidose hepática, caracterizada por acúmulo de gordura nos hepatócitos, alterando seu funcionamento. Sua etiologia pode variar, podendo ser decorrente de alimentação inadequada, toxinas ou secundária a outra alteração hepática. Esta revisão de literatura tem como objetivo comparar os diferentes métodos diagnósticos para lipidose hepática em aves. Para tanto foram selecionados oito artigos em língua inglesa que descrevem as etapas para se fechar o diagnóstico da enfermidade. Foi constatado que a biópsia hepática é o método mais confiável para se chegar ao diagnóstico definitivo.
