This work summarizes the results of a survey conducted with visitors and residents of São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP) during Carnival, in 2015. The questionnaire was designed with local partners and pretested. Respondents were randomly selected from the flow of people in the streets, during the five days of Carnival celebration. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and inferential statistics tools. The results let us delineate the visitors profile (origin, age, sex, education, profession); identify trip characteristics (means of transport, type and place of lodging, meals providers, source of information, form of organizing the travel, length of stay, frequency of visits, expenses forecast); and evaluate satisfaction with the trip (overall satisfaction, reasons for disappointment, intention of returning to the destination, most and least liked aspects). The survey included a evaluation of the services (lodging, meals, public services) as well. The survey results have been discussed with local business owners, municipal managers and municipal management councils members, and have proven to be quite useful for improving the planning of Carnival, identifying actions to reduce weaknesses and to make tourism more sustainable.
