Resumo: | Hypocalcemia in dairy cows: bibliographic review In this literature review, the most relevant topics about hypocalcemia in dairy cows, the animals most affected by the disease, were addressed, mainly due to their high milk production. For this, several reliable means of information were consulted, such as journals specialized in animal production (national and international), publicity journals, technical bulletins, theses, dissertations, conference proceedings and symposia, websites and books specialized in dairy farming. Based on these reports, it was possible to elucidate the concept of the disease, as well as its phases and the animal's metabolism during pregnancy, besides discussing the main factors that influence the onset of the disease. In a scenario where the cow has hypocalcemia, as the immune system is weakened, and the animal becomes a gateway to other associated diseases. If diagnosed at an early stage, the treatment is simple and affordable, but requires practice and management knowledge by professionals who take care of the herd, because in the early stages the animals do not show physical signs. Because it is the most critical period, end of pregnancy and beginning of lactation (prepartum and postpartum), and because animals very debilitated by this and other diseases bring much economic damage to the producer, the safest and recommended , are the use of prevention strategies, which in addition to efficiently reducing the incidence of hypocalcemia in the herd, also contribute to a good milk production during lactation. For all these reasons, it is important to know about the disease and its prevention, as healthy animals produce more and with better quality. |
