Forest fragmentaton is one of the most striking and hazardous phenomena related to agriculture expansion in tropical areas. It causes loss of biodiversity and of natural ecosystems, jeopardizing ecosystem services on local and regional scales, such as water and soil protection and climate regulation, but also on a global scale, such as carbon sequestration, solar radiation absorption and maintenance of global precipitation patterns, amongst others that are essential to sustain habitat diversity on Earth. To conserve these services that ecosystems provide, there is a need for conservation of species and their habitats. Herbarium is an important instrument to arise children's curiosity towards biodiversity and nature conservation, since it harbours preserved plant species samples and it is fundamental for research on biodiversity inventories. This project, entitled "Herbarium of Ilha Solteira (HISA) at school: awakening for conservation of the regional flora" aims at showing the importance of herbaria and arises the curiosity towards Natural Sciences and conservation of the local flora diversity. For this, we developed activities related to the practice of Botany at the full period State School Coronel Francisco Schmidt, in the municipality of Pereira Barreto, SP. We collected botanical material in green areas surrounding the school. The collected material was prepared and pressed according to usual botanical techniques, and herborized. The students observed and decribed the collected species in detail, elaborated an identification key and consulted virtual herbaria for species identification. We believe that the activities developed during this work will arise in the children a new perception towards nature, which will be more concerned in respect to plant and habitat conservation. It is also important to outline that such extension projects promote partnerships between public university and public school resulting in a formation of teachers compromised with a high-quality public education.
