Resumo: In the middle of the eighteenth century, from 1783 to 1792, Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira accomplished the most important scientific expedition undertaken by the Lusitanian crown for the recognition and domination of its colonies overseas. In his Philosophical Journey through the sertões of Brazil, the naturalist made analysis about the use and occupation of the territory, elaborated ethnographic descriptions and collected materials from the mineral, animal and vegetable kingdoms, traveling in the period in which he was ahead of this journey, approximately 40,000 km. Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, under the aegis of Enlightenment thought in vogue and under the constitution of Natural History, sought to describe the various natural and social aspects of the Brazilian territory, elaborating memories and descriptions about each village and region he had studied. His writings are of great importance for the most diverse areas of knowledge, including for geographic knowledge, since his descriptions of Brazilian landscapes and their varied singularities are meticulous and elucidative for the historiography of the colonial period. This study seeks to present the contributions of his travel reports, especially his diary, written during the exploration period of the Rio Negro regions, the objectives that were implicit in this expedition, and the importance of the descriptions elaborated by the naturalist regarding aspects related to the natural environment and socio-history of Brazil

Em sua Viagem Filosófica pelos sertões do Brasil, o naturalista teceu análises a respeito do uso e ocupação do território, elaborou descrições etnográficas e efetuou coletas de materiais dos reinos minerais, animais e vegetais, percorrendo no período em que esteve à frente desta empreitada, aproximadamente 40.000 km. Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, sob a égide do pensamento iluminista em voga à época e sob a constituição da História Natural, buscou descrever os diversos aspectos naturais e sociais do território brasileiro, elaborando memórias e descrições a respeito de cada povoação e região que estudara. Seus escritos são de suma importância para as mais diversas áreas do conhecimento, inclusive para o saber geográfico, pois suas descrições sobre as paisagens brasileiras e suas variadas singularidades são minuciosas e elucidativas para a historiografia do período colonial.
