Parkinson's disease is a neurological, chronic and progressive disorder that affects the central nervous system. There is a slow and progressive degeneration of neurons that synthesize dopamine, a neurotransmitter present in the substantia nigra of the brain of unknown etiology and is responsible for transmitting stimuli to perform automatic voluntary movements, such as walking. Since dopamine has being decreased, the movements become difficult to perform. The elderly require special care in oral health, which is influenced by chronic and degenerative diseases. The symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors and muscle stiffness, have been associated with increased incidence of dental problems such as periodontal disease, tooth loss, orofacial pain, dental caries, among others. The aim of this study is to conduct a literature review to present and discuss current scientific evidence on the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease in patients with Parkinson's disease. Most studies related to this issue show significant differences between the study group and the control group in relation to increased incidence and severity of periodontal pockets, tooth mobility and tooth loss, the symptoms of which undermine the realization of oral hygiene maneuvers in these patients
