Resumo: The autonomic nervous system is responsible for almost all neural control of circulation. The function of the sympathetic nervous system is the control of vasoconstriction and also increases the cardiac frequency and cardiac output, while the parasympathetic acts as an antagonist of these cardiac functions. This system is activated by centers located in the spinal cord, in the brainstem and hypothalamus. And its great feature is a quick response. The neural control of pressure depends on four prominent reflex arches, the baroreflex, the chemoreflex, the cardiopulmonary reflex and reflexes established by other less important receptors. In this review, we found 34 papers in English and 1 in Portuguese, which were published from 1951 to 2017 and discuss the physiology of the neural control of blood pressure. The research was complemented with the help of textbooks of Medical Physiology, Veterinary Physiology, Pathology Veterinary Medicine, Internal Medicine of Small Animals and Veterinary Cardiology. Through this literature review, it was possible to emphasize the crucial role of the Solitary Tract Nucleus (NTS) in processing signals from efferent peripheral receptors, as well as its role in triggering specific responses in other areas of the bulb to complete the reflex arc. Although there are many articles on the subject, new research has yet to be done, mainly involving the cardiopulmonary reflex and reflexes exerted by other receptors. Further studies are also needed to understand the interrelationship between cardiac diseases and the areas in the bulb responsible for neural control of blood pressure, so that the pathogenesis of these diseases, as well as the pharmacology for the espective treatments can be better understood.
