Resumo: Purpose: We present a new material to be used as a socket implant in anophthalmic socket reconstruction. Methods: We used calcium carbonate associated to vegetal polimer (extracted from a plant of oleaginous class) as implant in anophthalmic socket in 40 rabbits. The animals were divided in two groups: animals subjected to evisceration (group 1 - G1) and animals subjected to enucleation (group 2 - G2). The sphere was packed by sciera in G1 animals and used unpacked in G2 animals. The animals were put to death experimentally in 5 periods. 7, 15, 60 and 90 days post-surgery. Exenteration and material preparation for microscopic examination were done according to the Pathology Laboratory routine at UNESP. We observed both in G1 and G2, a gradual integration of fibrovascular tissue and sphere. On the 7th day, fibrovascular tissue is loose, made of young fibroblasts and fibrin. In the course of time, the tissues become thicker and move forward the center of the sphere. Presence of fibro-histiocyte reaction permeating the pores of the sphere. The observed results are promising to the end that vegetal polimer sphere be used in anophthalmic socket reconstruction.
