Resumo: Over the years, the field of medicinal plants has been a valuable source for basic research. The use of these plants became widespread in folk medicine, being used both in rural and in urban areas, as an alternative or to complement the treatment based on traditional medicine, like as reduction of hyperlipidemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the action of the peel and pulp of seeds of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa species, "in natura" in modulate the level of serum cholesterol in rabbits with induced hypercholesterolemia. The animals were divided into: G1 (control group), G2 (group treated with pulp and seeds) and G3 (group treated with bark). The experiment was developed into three phases: in phase 1, animals received water and food standard to assess baseline levels of cholesterol of animals, in phase 2, the animals of all groups received a diet supplemented until the end of the experiment, for hypercholesterolemia and in phase 3, the animals of the group 2 were treated with the passion fruit pulp and seed, while the animals in group 3 were treated with the passion fruit peel. In the 1st stage the average of cholesterol levels of the rabbits from the three experimental groups was approximately 41.46 mg/dL. In phase 2, the animals in all groups showed an increase on cholesterol levels (approximately 200%). In the last phase, the animals treated with both pulp and seed as those treated with the passion fruit peel, promoted a reduction in plasma cholesterol in rabbits. The animals from group G2 and G3 showed a decreasing in total cholesterol in the order of 75%.

O uso dessas plantas tornouse uma prática generalizada na medicina popular, sendo usada tanto em zonas rurais como no meio urbano, na forma alternativa ou complementar aos tratamentos da medicina tradicional, como na redução da hiperlipidemia. Neste trabalho investigou-se a ação da casca e da polpa com semente da espécie de Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa “in natura”, sobre o nível sérico de colesterol em coelhos com hipercolesterolemia induzida. Os animais foram divididos em: G1 (grupo controle), G2 (grupo tratado com polpa e semente) e G3 (grupo tratado com casca). O experimento foi dividido em três fases: na fase 1, os animais receberam água e ração normal para avaliar os níveis basais de colesterol dos animais; na fase 2, os animais de todos os grupos receberam ração suplementada até o final do experimento, para obter a hipercolesterolemia e na fase 3, os animais do grupo 2 foram tratados com polpa e semente do maracujá, enquanto os animais do grupo 3 foram tratados com a casca do maracujá. Na 1ª fase a taxa média de colesterol dos coelhos dos três grupos experimentais foi de 41,46 mg/dL. Na 2ª fase, os animais de todos os grupos apresentaram elevação no nível de colesterol (aproximadamente 200%). Na última fase, tanto os animais tratados com polpa e semente quanto os tratados com a casca do maracujá, tiveram redução no colesterol plasmático dos coelhos.
