Resumo: | The presence of invasive plants can result in a series of problems for the native vegetation. Pinus spp. plantations for example, are a major threat to the Cerrado vegetation because pine trees invade the different physiognomies and can lead to the replacement by a dense coniferous forest, changing thus, vegetation composition and dynamics. We aimed to apply different management techniques and monitor the regeneration of Cerrado species in an area of old Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis at the Estação Experimental de Itirapina, SP. Therefore, we established different treatments (control, removal needles and fire) to enhance the regeneration of Cerrado species. The main hypothesis of this study was that both burning treatments as well as the removal of needles would positively affecte the development of Cerrado species, increasing richness and abundance of species. The study was conducted at the Estação Experimental de Itirapina, SP in an old plantation area of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis We established 30 plots (10 plots/treatment) of 10x10m. After that, the following treatments were applied in September 2013: Control (C); Removal of needles layer (RA) (about 15 cm); and fire (Q). Before the application of treatments, we performed an initial vegetation survey (T0) of both woody and herbaeous layer in all experimental plots. For the woody layer, all individuals ≥1m were sampled, and we measured their height and perimeter at the soil at 15 cm above soil surface. For the herbaceous vegetation, we randomly established five suplots (1x1m) within the plots and we estimated vegetation cover of bare soil and dead biomass (litter + dead biomass standing), forbs, graminoid, palm trees, and shrubs <1 m. Furthermore, the average height of vegetation in each plot was also sampled. The woody species were collected and identified using material and list of Cerrado species of EEI. After applying the treatments surveys were performed every 4 months... |
