Locomotion is very important factor for the health of cattle. In this sense, the objective of this study was, first, to assess the possible impact of two types of management on the morphology of cattle hoof, and to evaluate differences between the hooves of the thoracic and pelvic limbs and lateral and medial digits using the correspondence analysis. In a second approach, using bone densitometry was possible to evaluate the skeletal density. In this second phase we evaluated the bone mineral density of the third metacarpal and phalanx of Nellore confined and raised in the pasture. Twenty-four ends of cattle members, 12 kept in confinement and 12, in the pasture, were coleted after they were slaughtered at 20 months of age. The ends of the limbs were sectioned in carpometacarpal/tarsometatarsal joint. Eight macroscopic measurements of the nail apparatus were carried out, involving the environment in which the animals were allocated and the production system. The samples were measured with a millimeter tape in the lateral and medial digit of the fore and hindlimbs to obtain the following data - abaxial wall height, axial wall height, sole length, sole width, bulb length, bulb width, bulb height and lateral wall length. After macroscopic measurement, the ends of forelimb, distal to the carpometacarpal joint were scanned by of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry equipment Hologic®. Multivariate exploratory analysis of multiple correspondence showed an association between the pelvic and thoracic limbs and digits of the medial and lateral animal feedlot and pasture. Confined animals had higher hooves in the axial and abaxial walls, the highest and lowest sole bulb height. Hooves of animals kept in the pasture soil had low bulb and greater length of the sole.
