Resumo: This study highlights the importance of healthy eating in school with a focus on maintaining and promoting appropriate health status. Therefore, the objective was to discuss with school age children the importance of eating healthy and extend this information to parents and school staff. Participants were 76 pupils aged between 9 and 12 years, enrolled in 5th and 6th grades in a Municipal School of Basic Education (EMEF) located in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Botucatu-SP. The study was conducted in six stages and the contents were discussed in meetings. To verify the prior knowledge of the class on the subject, it was administered a questionnaire about their eating habits. It was possible to identify some positive and surprising facts as: 59% of students ate vegetables every day, 65% preferred to fruit juice to soft drinks, 82% chew food well, 71% ate at regular times doing five to six meals a day and 76% thought that the ideal menu is rice with beans. On the other hand, some items had already expected responses, as: 79% of students usually ate dinner or lunch watching television, 71% did not avoid eating sweets and 85% are foud of fried foods. Interesting to note was that 94% of students responded that the best food for the body is what contains more protein, demonstrating that the vast majority of the class had no clue about nutrients and their functions in the body. From these observations, we suggest importance of working on issues related to healthy eating in schools, since the students spend much of their time in this environment. It is from the school that access to parents becomes easier allowing them to receive information about balanced diet, healthy, issues and consequences of inappropriate feeding practices at home.

It is from the school that access to parents becomes easier allowing them to receive information about balanced diet, healthy, issues and consequences of inappropriate feeding practices at home.O presente trabalho destaca a importância da alimentação saudável em escolares com foco na manutenção e promoção do adequado estado de saúde.
