Resumo: | The social wasps have an efficient system of chemical communication by pheromones. Pheromones in social wasps are responsible for inducing activities such as alarm, recruitment, defense colony, beyond recognition of members of the colony itself. These components (mostly are non-polar and volatile) are generally secreted by various exocrine glands, such as venom gland, Dufour gland, Richard gland, Van der Vecht gland, among others. The integument of social wasps is covered by a mixture of waxes and hydrocarbons epicuticular, which together with a variety of other molecules, can play different roles in the chemical communication of these insects, one of those roles and focus of this work is the recognition of individuals intraspecific, more specifically the recognition of parental types (individuals of the same colony). This study aimed to identify the chemical compounds of low molecular masses present in the integument of the social wasp Polybia paulista of three distinct colonies, using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to characterize the chemical profile that constitutes the chemical cocktail responsible for recognition of the species, as well as the compounds that allow the identification of parental types. A total of 40 compounds were found which are mostly saturated and unsaturated alkanes, and other molecules such as acids, esters, ketone and amide. Among these, 32 compounds are common to the three colonies and apparently are the chemical basis for the recognition of the specie, and the same compounds showed quantitative differences among the three colonies. Specific compounds were also found for each colony, which apparently constitute the chemical basis of recognition of parental types. Esses compostos (em sua maioria são de natureza não polar e volátil) são de maneira geral secretados por diversas glândulas exócrinas, tais como: glândula de veneno, glândula de Dufour, glândula de Richard, glândula de Van der Vecht, entre outras e podem estar aderidos sobre o tegumento das vespas. O tegumento de vespas sociais é recoberto por uma mistura de ceras e hidrocarbonetos epicuticulares, que, em conjunto com uma variedade de outras moléculas, podem desempenhar diferentes papéis na comunicação química destes insetos, um destes papéis e foco deste trabalho é o reconhecimento de indivíduos intraespecífico, mais especificamente o reconhecimento de tipos parentais (indivíduos da mesma colônia). Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar quimicamente os compostos de baixas massas moleculares presentes no tegumento da vespa social Polybia paulista oriunda de três distintas colônias, através de cromatografia gasosa e espectrometria de massas (GC-MS), com finalidade de caracterizar o perfil químico que constitui o coquetel químico responsável pelo reconhecimento da espécie, bem como dos compostos que permitem a identificação de tipos parentais. Foram encontrados um total de 40 compostos, sendo em sua maioria alcanos saturados e insaturados, e outras moléculas como ácidos, ésteres, cetona e amida. Dentre estes, 32 compostos são comuns às três colônias e aparentemente constituem a base química de reconhecimento da espécie, e ainda os mesmos apresentaram diferenças quantitativas entre as três colônias.
