Resumo: | Quantitative fractography is considered an important tool for investigating flaws in materials; it provides a lot of relevant information from the fracture surfaces, considering the microstructural characteristics and failure mechanisms that govern the fracture of the material. Through quantitative analysis, investigative processes can be more accurate, with justified conclusions. Many authors have proposed the use of fractals in quantitative analysis of structural failures. Within this context, the fracture surface would be a mixed fractal or multifractal, because the formation of its topography depends on microstructural variations and the field stresses acting at the crack tip. Thus, the main objective of this work is to evaluate the relationship between fracture toughness (mode I and II) and fractal behavior of various classes of materials, evaluating the association between the action of fracture micromechanisms and the relief formation of fracture surfaces. The materials used were carbon/epoxy composite, phenol formaldehyde resin, titania and 15-5PH steel, which were tested in different loading modes (test DCB, ENF, SCB and KC) and in different conditions. The acquisition of images of the fracture surfaces was performed using an optical microscope and reflection topographies obtained by extended depth from focus reconstruction method. The fractal dimension was calculated using the box-counting method, and subsequently classified as textural dimension (Dt), which describes a physical process which controls surface roughness, and structural dimension (Ds), where the structural characteristics of ...
