The process of modernization of agriculture entailed a series of negative consequences to the social, economic and environmental spheres, which, over the latest decades, were analysed in distinct ways in order to comprehend not only the reasons for modernization, but also new paths that could be taken to reduce these impacts. As result of these new directions, a brand-new way to interpret the rural environment emerges, from incorporation of the notion of multifunctionality, which proposes providing the areas with functions other than those exclusively agrarian and of production; which could facilitate not only the full understanding of the rural environment and its dynamics, but also the orientation of public policies and programs to the sector. One of these functions is the preservation and conservation of the natural resources found in the rural properties. From its assumption, in this context, the following monograph strived to understand and size the extension that these precepts has on guiding family practices and their spatial representations; get to know the rural area of Rio Claro/SP and assess the municipal practices for conservation, upkeeping and usage of said resources, specifically those about the preservation of springs found in the small municipal rural holdings, through the Payment for Environmental Services (PES)
