This work paper wish’s to observe the historical formation of the middle class in Brazil and making a comparison with the American middle class. This is a literary review. It is observed how the middle classes are attached to their social honor and use it to differentiate themselves from the proletariat, as well as financial dependence keeps the middle class subservient to the interests of the elites. For this, it is first necessary understand class and other concepts linked to it. Then, how an individual absorbs the knowledge of a society and how he identifies with it. Finally speaking of middle class, we will talk about the formation of the Brazilian middle class from a class of free men and attached to landowners that only grows as a response to the needs of the state and the increase in commercial activity in Brazil. And in the c American middle class case, where it was full of small proprietaries and with strong economic and political activity in the US and how this middle class is losing ground to monopolies and large companies. Finally, it deals with the identity of the Brazilian middle class and what are the most popular factors regarding being considered part of it.
