Resumo: Wear is one of the main causes of failures and loss of mechanical and structural components in the world. In machining, reducing production costs is vital. Since the high speed steel is the most used material in the manufacturing of machining tools and following the advance in the laser surface treatment field, this work aims to study a way to reduce wear of high speed steel tools, approaching the surface heat treatment via laser in a tool of a high speed steel. To analyze the effects of this treatment, samples were treated by a laser system and followed by a microabrasive wear test by rotating ball for periods of 300, 600 and 900 seconds. Untreated samples were also used in the wear tests for comparison. The volume eroded in the untreated sample in the 300 second test was 8.8% greater than in the treated sample. For the 600 and 900 seconds tests, the untreated samples had a 53.1% and 6.9% lower eroded volume, respectively, when compared to treated samples. Three hypotheses for the negative results were made: The first brings post-treatment roughness as a source of friction and adhesive wear; the second says that variations in processing speeds led to samples with different surfaces and the third hypothesis brings the idea that the subsurface layers had their microstructures altered, resulting in softer portions. It turned out that the results were inconclusive and for future works it is necessary further analysis of the obtained microstructures.
