Resumo: This thesis aims to investigate the fictional prose of Herculano Marcos Inglês de Sousa (1853-1918), as well as to analyze his texts of literary criticism, published between the years of 1875 and 1877. The critic appreciations found by this research point out to controversies related to his first works; inserting the writer in the polemic of the authorship of the first Brazilian fictional text molded by the Realistic school of literature. It's known that during the author's college years he had contact with the modern ideas - something that is reflected in his prose. The research in the Brazilian press revels that Inglês de Sousa was the spreader of the Realism - in the way he understood it -, by the means of both literary criticism and fictional prose. His literary criticism published in the newspaper A Autoridade (from Pernambuco), in the right moment the author was writing his first novel, O cacaulista (The planter of cocoa, in 1875), makes his influences of the Realism emerge. The novels História de um pescador (Tales of a fisherman) and O coronel Sangrado (The colonel Sangrado) are published in the following years in the press of São Paulo - as well as the short stories O rebelde (The rebel), O sineiro da matriz (The church's bellboy), Amor que mata (Love that kills) and O acauã (The Laughing Falcon). The press also notices the publication of A feiticeira (The sorceress) in booklet. The short stories are revised to be published in the volume Contos amazônicos (Tales from Amazonia, 1893) - where are also found four other texts. The relations his literary criticism establishes with his fictional prose written between 1876 and 1877 are inevitable. The author not only is a divulgator of the Realism but also tries to experiment in his fictional works the characteristics of the new artistic aesthetic...

The author not only is a divulgator of the Realism but also tries to experiment in his fictional works the characteristics of the new artistic aesthetic...Esta tese visa trazer à luz e analisar as obras ficcionais de Herculano Marcos Inglês de Sousa (1853-1918), bem como seus textos de crítica literária, produzidos entre os anos de 1875 e 1877.
