Mycology, the science that studies fungi, every year, needs more qualified professionals to investigate and work with these organisms according to the growing demand in the most diverse sectors. One of the main ways to train professionals for the area is initial training in Biological Sciences. However, the academic reality reveals an underrepresentation of subjects in undergraduate, postgraduate courses and lines of research focused on Mycology, mainly in Brazil, compromising the offer of professionals in this career. Thus, this research aimed to investigate and to describe the perception of Biological Sciences students, from three public universities in the state of São Paulo, regarding their work in the area of Mycology through an online questionnaire and qualitative analysis of the responses. It was found that the participants recognize and validate the presence of biologists in the field of Mycology, in addition to pointing out many areas and activities that go beyond the possibilities present in official documents that regulate the profession in the country. However, this perception of the multidisciplinarity of the area may reflect the superficial and unspecific teaching of Mycology in these courses since most participants do not take specific subjects in the curriculum about Mycology in their universities and because they present an anthropocentric view of fungi.
