Resumo: | The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of different polishing methods on the surface roughness of resin-based composites when subjected to thermal cycling procedure. One hundred and ninety-two specimens were divided into 24 groups according to the types of composites (Filtek Z250, Point 4, Renamel Microfill, Filtek Supreme Plus, Renamel Microhybrid and Premise) and finishing and polishing systems (Sof-Lex Pop On, Super Snap, Flexidisc and Flexidisc + Enamelize). The specimens were subjected to thermal cycling procedure (5°C and 55°C), totalling 5000 cycles, and dwell time of 30 seconds. After thermal cycling, new measuremens of surface roughness were performed. Data were tested for Kolmorov-Smirnov normality test and the means compared by ANOVA repeated measure and Fisher PLSD test (p=0.05). The Filtek Supreme Plus showed the lowest values of surface roughness (0.065 ± 0.017 μm) before the thermocycling, with no statistically significant difference for Renamel Microfill (0.070 ± 0.019 μm), Filtek Z250 (0.078 ± 0.040 μm) and Premise (0.079 ± 0.024 μm). After thermocycling, the Filtek Supreme Plus continued to have the lowest surface roughness (0.083 ± 0.016 μm), with statistically significant difference for the other studied materials (p<0.05). After thermocycling, there was no statistically significant difference among all the polishing techniques studied (p=0.0610). It was concluded that thermocycling procedure was able to change the surface roughness of composite resins. The Filtek Supreme Plus showed the lowest value of surface roughness before and after the thermocycling, while different methods of polishing and finishing did not result in surface roughness changes after thermocycling |
