Resumo: The present study aimed to answer the following question: What is the efficacy of the use of milk substitutes in the performance of weight gain in calves when compared to traditional breastfeeding using whole milk? It has been verified through the analysis of several articles of specialized literature on this subject that in general ensures that the use of milk substitutes is inferior to traditional breastfeeding in relation to weight gain. It was also observed that when substitutes were used with the protein source of vegetal origin, the animals presented inferior performance in gain of weight when compared to the animals that received liquid diet with substitutes whose protein source was composed of ingredients of milk origin. The use of substitutes, despite the fact that they usually present inferior performance, can be effective on the feeding of calves

Verificou-se através da análise de diversos artigos de literatura sobre esse assunto que, de modo geral, o emprego de sucedâneos lácteos se mostra inferior ao aleitamento tradicional em relação ao quesito de ganho de peso. Constatou-se também que quando se empregava sucedâneos com a fonte proteica de origem vegetal, os animais apresentavam desempenho inferior em ganho de peso quando comparados com os animais que recebiam dieta liquida com sucedâneos cuja fonte proteica era composta por ingredientes de origem láctea.
