Prevenção e acompanhamento de úlceras por pressão em idosos institucionalizados: relato de experiência

The Brazilian population ageing is characterized by corresponding population of 13% of the total population, of which 1% is in long-stay institutions (LTC) for the elderly. The risk for the development of pressure ulcers (PU) in the elderly in LTC is 62.5% and the prevalence of 7.3%. Health professionals working in LTCs should be well trained for the care of patients at risk or affected by PU. Objective: To develop capacity in nursing graduate students in prevention, classification, treatment, development and monitoring of PU using participatory teaching methodology and fieldwork and provide updated education to nursing professionals who work at LTC in a city of São Paulo State. Results: The proposal developed by the survey phase demands, planning, execution and participatory evaluation. The upgrade program encompassed the theme for the following content approach: Prevention and risk factors for PU; Forms of assessment and evolution of the wound; Monitoring and treatment of PU; Nutrition in geriatrics and geriatric and gerontological instruments in the evaluation. Conclusion:The project enabled the implementation of intersectoral actions between the university and the LTC focusing on specificities and care demands of the elderly population. It was found that the university extension activities allowed the development of citizenship, allowing the university to fulfill its social function and providing satisfaction and benefits to all its participants.
