Due to the lack of verbal communication of animals pain assessment in veterinary medicine is a challenge therefore it is important to develop studies to evaluate physiological and behavioral indicatives of pain. The aim of this study was to validate and refine a scale for assessment of acute pain in horses undergoing orchiectomy. So 24 animals were allocated into four groups: AG - anesthetized animals; AAG - animals anesthetized with prior analgesia, CG - animals anesthetized and underwent orchiectomy with postoperative analgesia; CAG - animals anesthetized and underwent orchiectomy with prior analgesia. All animals were videotaped and pain was assessed in four different moments: before surgery or anesthesia (M1), four hours after recovery from anesthesia and prior to administration of analgesics CG (M2), two hours after M2 (M3) and 24 hours after surgery (M4) by four blind observers and a gold standard observer that had a greater familiarity with the scale in two distinct periods. Additionally the proposed scale was compared with the visual analogue scales, simple descriptive scale and numerical scale. The sensitivity and specificity of each scale item were determined as well as construct validity, criterion, responsiveness and reliability. Statistical analysis was carried out to refine the items, excluding those who did not have sensitivity and specificity. The analyzes confirmed the criterion validity and construct however the scale reliability was barely acceptable. The refinement of scale has resulted in an instrument with a smaller number of items that require validation in future studies
