Resumo: Geographical indications (GI) are part of the existent Intelectual Property instruments. It is a sign used on services or products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or reputation that are due to that origin. It reflects a unique combination of natural resources, cultural assets and history in a given territory. In Brazil, the GI policy is part of the rural development policies. While functioning as product differentiators on the market, GIs also serve to territorial development due to the link with the territory and the collective process needed to its recognition. Thus, this work aimed to analyze witch aspects of development are achieved short-term after the recognition of a geographical indication. The indication of provenance of Serro was chosen due to the period of recognition as well as the importance of the product (artisanal cheese) in Minas Gerais. The exploratory-descriptive research was performed by the case study method with in-depth interviews and documental analysis. In the case studied, the territorial development has not been fully achieved. Impacts related to physical-economic, human and social capital were listed. Nevertheless, the analysis showed that the effectiveness of geographical indications is based on management, commercial, political and social activities.
