Resumo: | It was made study of the technical and economical viability of the use of municipal solid waste (MSW) in a Rankine cycle to obtain energy. Trying to diversify the energy sources and also use renewable energy, it is possible to use MSW to supply the energetic necessities. It was made a revision of the literature to identify the most significant contributions in the area of study. It was made a research to find information about equipment, composition and combustion to use MSW in incineration plants. It was defined possible configurations to the cycle according to the literature. It was made a thermodynamic model for the proposed cycle and simulations were done using the EES software. It was made an economical study to find the viability of the project. Lastly it was made an analysis of greenhouse gas emission in CO2 equivalent tons, to compare with the use of landfills and an initial analysis of the environmental impact. The obtained results indicated that there is technical viability, with the installed power of 45 MW from 1200 ton/day of MSW. With that we can supply energy for 37 people for each 100 producing MSW - but it is needed some adjustments, given the specifications of the project. It was showed that there is economical viability in one of the cases - when the tax of waste is accounted. But, with the return of about 10,42% per year, investment of 190,7 millions of dolars, payback of 9 years and the risk of this type of investment, it is not much economically attractive. Despite that, it can be a interesting alternative for the dispose of MSW, given its technical and environmental advantages - like energy recovery and pollution reduction |

Despite that, it can be a interesting alternative for the dispose of MSW, given its technical and environmental advantages - like energy recovery and pollution reductionEstudou-se a viabilidade técnica e econômica do uso de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) em ciclo Rankine para obtenção de energia elétrica.
