Resumo: Maria Esther Bueno was an important Brazilian tennis player, who won the biggest and most recognized tennis tournaments in the world. The objective of this research was to understand the process that enabled Maria Esther Bueno to become a great athlete at a time of low insertion of women in competitive sport. Articles from the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, referring to the tennis player’s performances and published between 1950 and 1970, were analyzed. Sponsor of the tennis player at the time, the newspaper highlighted conservative and innovative aspects in the representation of a woman in a competitive environment. The research identified elements of gender disruptions in the insertion of women in sport, propagated by the athlete’s achievements and innovations in a style of play marked by competitiveness, power, efficiency and use of specialized clothing.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue comprender los procesos que permitieron a Maria Esther Bueno convertirse en una gran deportista en un momento de baja inserción de mujeres en el deporte competitivo. Las incidencias de la tenista fueron analizadas en artículos del diario brasileño O Estado de São Paulo, publicados entre 1950 y 1970. Patrocinador de la tenista en ese momento, el diario destacó aspectos conservadores e innovadores en la representación de una mujer en un entorno competitivo. La investigación identificó elementos de disrupción de género en la inserción de la mujer en el deporte, propagados por los logros de la deportista y por las innovaciones de un estilo de juego marcado por la competitividad, el poder, la eficiencia y el uso de ropa especializada.Maria Esther Bueno foi uma importante tenista brasileira que venceu os maiores e mais reconhecidos torneios de tênis do mundo. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender os processos que possibilitaram a Maria Esther Bueno tornar-se uma grande atleta em uma época de baixa inserção das mulheres no esporte competitivo. Foram analisadas as incidências da tenista em matérias do jornal O Estado de São Paulo, publicadas entre 1950 e 1970. Patrocinador da tenista na época, o jornal ressaltava aspectos conservadores e inovadores na representação de uma mulher em um ambiente competitivo.
